Bioinformatics support for clinical operations and research programs is much needed at Mass Eye and Ear (MEEI). The diverse and constantly evolving nature of these bioinformatics needs, driven by the fast-changing genomic technologies, necessitate such support being provided not only as a shared resource but also on a collaborative basis. It is therefore envisioned that a faculty-level Director of Bioinformatics will best fulfill this role by establishing an MEEI Bioinformatics Shared Resource (MBSR) and engaging in research collaborations with a large number of MEEI clinicians and researchers.
The Director of Bioinformatics would also serves as the point person for MEEI bioinformatics and the liaison between MEEI and local or national bioinformatics/genomics groups. In addition, as a faculty member, the Director of Bioinformatics is expected to establish and maintain an independent research program that aligns with the mission of MEEI in general, albeit with a different research focus than most MEEI investigators because of the expected applied bioinformatics focus. Academic evaluations will also be met with a different set of expectations than most MEEI investigators because of this and the highly collaborative nature of the research program. The following sections outline itemized descriptions of the position in terms of appointments, responsibilities, and expectations. A draft of anticipated budgetary and resource needs is also provided.
